Damn, do we love movies! So here’s a list of our favourite movies that largely feature a wedding as part of the plot. You won’t find too many of the obvious ones like ‘Father of the Bride’, and ‘The Wedding Crashers’ here.
A Guy Thing
A movie about a marriage that’s nobody really wants to happen, Jason Lee plays the titular “guy”. It’s not an amazing film, but it’s sweet, and it inspired us to very nearly sing ‘Islands in the Stream’ at our very own wedding (instead of vows – we shit you not). Julian bottled it in the end as he wasn’t all that familiar with the song outside of this film. He is now of course, and it’s a regular karaoke choice of ours.
The Graduate
Ahh, Mrs Robinson… What else needs saying. When Julian worked at the cinema someone had a 35mm print of this, which they screened late one night. Ironically, one of his young colleagues, at the time 18, was in a relationship with his very own Mrs Robinson, a parent of a friend from school. I think she was in her 50’s. It was his first relationship… 😬
The Wedding Singer
I’ll be honest, though we’re not wedding singers, this is the closest a movie has come to inspiring us to work in the wedding industry. The camaraderie among the different people working the weddings is spot on, even if we haven’t met Billy Idol.
Coming To America
Yeah, it’s not really a wedding movie, and yet, it kinda is. He’s gone to Queens to find a bride after all. A classic, and a very quotable movie indeed. If you haven’t seen it, you haven’t lived!
Licence to Kill
A bit controversial, but Timothy Dalton is Julian’s favourite Bond. This wasn’t as good as The Living Daylights, but it starts at Felix Lighter’s wedding, and frankly the Groom and Best Man make probably the best ever entrance. Someone must have copied this somewhere.
The Princess Bride
“Maawwwage” Jessica’s godfather who officiated our wedding, started with this line. It was legendary. 😆
Four Weddings & a Funeral
“Fuck” Need we say anymore?
When Harry Met Sally
We’re both suckers for this movie. Probably the best movie about a girl and a boy, and definitely one of our favourite rom-com’s, it’s also made by the same guy as The Princess Bride.
The Sweetest Thing
If you haven’t seen this movie go watch is now. It’s a chick flick, but not as you’d expect it. If you thought ‘Bridesmaids’ was original, you clearly haven’t seen this. Make sure you watch the version with the Dick song, I can’t remember which, but either the US or the International version has some of the greatest moments cut out for some reason.
Honorary mentions:
Her Majesties Secret Service – I know, another James Bond, but it’s the one where he gets married!! The best story, but the worst Bond actor.
The Best Man – I haven’t seen this all the way through, but it’s the one that started the Electric Slide to the song Candy, by Cameo. We’ve been at a couple of weddings where the dance floor has broken in this. It’s amazing. Really. Truly.
The Dear Hunter – Definitely not a wedding movie. But it features a very realistic wedding and Meryl Streep as one of the most beautiful brides ever on film.
